Our sub-genre is Slasher which means the antagonists identity is usually hidden behind something that is significant to their character, for example Freddy Krueger who's face is hidden behind the burn scars on his face. This is one of the make-up/costumes we were inspired by for our own film concept. Furthermore, the other characters in the concept have costumes which will represent their characters and behaviour, making it obvious who is who in our concept, (like the virgin, slut, jock, etc...) However, we also wanted to incorporate the use of masks, we took inspiration from Scream (Ghostface), this will add variety and make it unique compared to other antagonists in typical Slasher films.
On this page, I will present our ideas and our inspirations for different costume and make-up from films, pictures and make-up tutorials for the main characters that will be featured in the trailer for our film concept.

FILM INSPIRATIONS (ANTAGONIST)
MOVIE/TV SHOW: BILLY CLUB We have been inspired by the weapon used in this film, which is a baseball bat with nails and a knife at the end of the bat. By featuring the nails and the knife, it represents a phallic image which suggests masculine power which then proceeds to the antagonist being 'castrated' when he is outsmarted by a woman. Our antagonist will be a male which means our protagonist will be a woman, therefore, this film (Billy Club) fits our film idea and criteria, which makes it much easier for our group to come up with ideas for our trailer. MOVIE/TV SHOW: AMERICAN HORROR STORY We decided to also take inspiration from the horror TV show, American Horror Story which bases its plots on actual events that have happened in the past. One character that we've taken inspiration from is Larry Harvey who suffered a painful experience with fire, his burn scars look extremely realistic which creates visceral pleasure to the viewer, making it hard to look at his face. Our antagonist will have half of his face covered by a big burn scar, we decided to bring both inspirations together, and create one look which pays tribute to both iconic burn victims known in the horror industry. MOVIE/TV SHOW: SCREAM We decided that for the other half of the antagonists face, he will be wearing a plain, white mask to cover up his real, normal face. We took inspiration for the film Scream which features the male antagonist in a white mask to hide his identity. The significance of masks is that it hides the persons identity which can be further connoted that they want to hide their real self, for example in Friday the 13th, Jason covers his identity because of his scars he has which happened in his childhood past that he's embarrassed and angry about. |

PROTAGONIST COSTUME AND MAKE UP INSPO
FILM INSPIRATION (PROTAGONIST)
MOVIE/TV SHOW: SCREAM
This film was chosen as it features the obvious final girl/virgin which links to our final girl, Jaymie. Sidney (in Scream), wears dark, muted colours and dresses well covered and practically, furthermore she has brown hair which is usually seen on the 'innocent' girl, unlike blonde hair which is usually associated with the 'slut'. This shows that she is innocent and not promiscuous as well as masculine which is the main feature of a final girl. Sidney wears very minimal make-up, but when there's the interaction with the antagonist, she suffers from a wound/cut on her face which is what we were inspired by. The wound tutorial down below is the video that I have most helpful and informative out of all the ones I watched, I also will be following the 'natural make up tutorial' which is seen above, to re-create Sidney's natural face. |

REAL MEDIA TEXTS
CABIN IN THE WOODS
The first trailer that our team was influenced by was 'Cabin In The Woods (2012), this is because it includes most of the relevant Slasher conventions that are required to make a typically structured horror trailer. Some examples of the usual conventions are wounds, scars, cuts and excessive amounts of blood and gore, this is iconic in the trailer for Cabin In The Woods. I was also able to identify the use of several unique phallic objects, one example is the use of the bear trap which can be seen at 1:52 where is it being dragged along the floor by the antagonist. This signifies penetration of his victims which depicts patriarchy and male dominance over the main protagonists. Evidence of the use of wounds, scars, cuts and excessive amounts of blood and gore in the trailer can be seen at 1:26/1:27, where Curt (Chris Hemsworth), is covered in blood which indicates that he has been struggling for his life, this follows the conventions of a Slasher film.
Using this trailer will influence our antagonist to use a unique weapon which will be iconic to the character, for example, in Texas Chainsaw Massacre, the antagonist's iconic weapon is a chainsaw, in our case, we have used a baseball bat with nails at the end to represent our character. Using this weapon, it shows originality due to the lack of popular films using it, however we did in fact take inspiration from Cabin In The Woods to use such a different and unique weapon.
Lighting and locations is also significant in this film trailer, making it evident that the genre is in fact a Slasher. The conventions of a Slasher, in terms of location, is usually set somewhere quiet, like the suburbs where the place is low in population and far from civilization, this allows the killer to commit his actions freely, without interference's. Cabin in the Woods is noticeably set in the suburbs where there is not a lot of people around which follows the typical conventions for a Slasher. This can be seen at 0:43, in the establishing shot done by using the tracking movement of the cabin, this gives an insight to the viewers of how the plot may go.
Finally, lighting is also a significant element, not just in Slasher films, but Horror all round. The low-key lighting is typically used to add tension to the scene, it is mostly dark and it is used to add shadows in order to give the mysterious feeling. The connotations of shadows are mysteries, this is one of the conventions of slasher films and it is one of the important aspect of this genre of film.
We will achieve similar scenes by creating wounds that look some-what similar to the characters make-up in the trailer on to the final girl in our trailer, this displays our chosen genre; Slasher. Furthermore, we will aim for mostly low-key lighting in our shots as well as lights flickering in some clips, this is essential in a horror trailer as it creates a sense of mystery for the viewers.

TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE (2013)
Texas Chainsaw Massacre was our second real media text inspiration for a wide range of reasons; we took inspiration from a couple scenes in the trailer as well as the costume and props used in the film. Firstly, as you can see in the first image, is it a screenshot of a person washing blood off of their hands in a sink (1:03). This connotes that either they were in danger or they have caused danger, causing the audience curiosity which will guide them to watch the film. We aim to add in a similar clip of someone washing their bloody hands in our trailer as the extra amount of blood follows the conventions of a typical Slasher film. The old, dirty sink connotes decay and corrosion which will allow the audience insight into the setting of the film/trailer and how the characters live in their usual lives; usually, the antagonist lives in a decomposing habitat.
In the second screenshot, you are able to see that it is a person walking down some stairs which also resembles a corridor or tunnel. This is yonic imagery which creates a sense of life and death within a film as it can be implied that these things symbolise either the birth canal, and therefore is the way to bring new life or they can either be used to highlight to audiences that the light at the end of the tunnel is where you die and your life ceases at the end of it, by foreshadowing deaths in a film, it allows the audience to put pieces of a puzzle together which makes watching a film more exciting and exhilarating. To link this even more to our sub-genre, we will make sure to include blood on the walls and/or on the floor aswell to show a sign of struggle.
Finally, in the last screenshot, you are able to see a man(most likely the antagonist) fitting a mask onto his head. Masks and disguises are usually consistently seen in Slasher films as the antagonists hide themselves from being exposed to their victims. The masks and disguises hides the identity of the villain so there is a sense of enigma between the antagonist and the protagonist but also with us the audience because we don’t know who the antagonist is there is a mystery already there with who the wearer of the mask is. This can be seen in the iconic slasher films; Friday the 13th, Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Scream and Halloween. We took inspiration from this by making sure the antagonist has a mask to wear, we preferably wanted a mask that was cut in half as we want our antagonists scars to be visible. Scars are also highly recognisable in Slasher films as it infers that the antagonists have also suffered from a lot.
We will achieve similar scenes by firstly making sure we once again, have an excessive amount of blood to further emphasise that this film we are 'producing' is a Slasher. Additionally, we will make sure to add clips of people walking down corridors or tunnels which will the audience more of an insight to the plot of the film by foreshadowing characters deaths in the trailer. Lastly, we will be certain to have a mask for our antagonist which will further create a mysterious atmosphere for the audience.

This was my first attempt at creating a 'slit throat', I had researched and followed other make-up tutorials prior to this experiment with the make-up. I achieved this by starting on a clean base, laying down some latex using a sponge. I waited for it to get tacky, making it easier to work with then I created the wound shape by ripping up some cotton balls. I then coated the cotton with latex and did another layer with cotton balls and latex, once that dried I coated the cotton wound with a foundation that matched her skin colour, i then finished that off with powder. For the gory part, I used eyeshadow to create bruising round the wound and added dark brown eyeshadow and scab blood inside the wound to create dimension. To finish this off, I added fake blood to give a fresh cut feel to it.
